ServiceMaster DSI in Indianapolis Answers the Question: Is Black Mold a Myth?

October 28th, 2015 · 1 Comment

Black Mold. With a sinister name right out of a horror movie and a reputation sensationalized by news media, most people in Indianapolis would agree that black mold would not be a welcome visitor in their homes. In fact, most people would rather not have any mold at all in their homes, but it’s a common occurrence, especially with our moist Midwestern summers and older buildings. If you find yourself in need of mold removal, do you need to move the children out in the middle of the night if you are not sure what kind of mold it is? No! ServiceMaster DSI shares some insight into what black mold is and the steps needed to have it safely and properly removed.

What is black mold?
Black mold, or Stachybotrys Chartarum, is a greenish-black mold that is often slimy in appearance. If you suspect black mold or have seen something like it in your home, our trained technicians can come out and assess the type of mold it is. Mold is best compared to an allergen such animal (cat or dog) dander, and while some people may have severe allergic reactions to it, others may have no reaction at all.  No matter how clean your home is, mold spores are everywhere, and they especially love moist and dark areas of the home.

Left untreated, mold can cause health hazards for some. The EPA states “Molds produce allergens (substances that can cause allergic reactions), irritants, and in some cases, potentially toxic substances (mycotoxins). Inhaling or touching mold or mold spores may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Allergic responses include hay fever-type symptoms, such as sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rash (dermatitis). Allergic reactions to mold are common.”

What your eye can see is not always the full picture when it comes to mold damage. Our professionally trained technicians have worked all over Indianapolis, Greenwood, Brownsburg, and Plainfield, and are familiar with proper and safe mold removal procedures. They will determine if the mold growth has spread into the floor, wall, or ceiling area without disturbing the mold spores which can spread and cause more problems.
